Allergy Types

Four Main Allergy Types

Allergies are classified into four main types: drug allergies, food allergies, respiratory allergies, and skin allergies. Each type is triggered by a specific allergen with a unique protein structure, which causes the immune system to produce an allergic reaction.

Drug Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a medication. Common drug allergies include reactions to penicillin, aspirin, ACE inhibitors, and other antibiotics.

Food Allergies are triggered by specific proteins found in certain foods. The most common food allergens include eggs, milk, peanuts and tree nuts, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

Respiratory Allergies affect the respiratory system and are often seasonal or year-round. Common respiratory allergens include dust, mold, pet dander, and pollen (hay fever).

Skin Allergies cause reactions on the surface of the skin. Types of skin allergies include contact dermatitis, cosmetic allergies, hives, and metal allergies.

Allergy Type FAQ

Are allergies seasonal or year-round?

Allergies can be either seasonal or year-round. Pollen and hay fever allergies tend to be seasonal, while allergies to dust, mold, and pet dander can cause symptoms throughout the year.

What symptoms do different allergy types cause?

Allergy symptoms vary depending on the type of allergen. Respiratory allergens typically affect the breathing and nasal passages, while food and drug allergens can trigger digestive or systemic reactions. Skin allergens cause localized skin reactions. In severe cases, any allergy type can lead to a serious allergic reaction.
