Asthma Lung Function Test

Asthma Body Box Plethysmograph

What is the Body Box Plethysmograph Test?

Body Plethysmography is a test that shows how much air your lungs can hold after a deep breath and how much air is left in your lungs after you exhale as much as possible. This test shows your physician how well your lungs are working.

Why is the Body Box Plethysmograph Test Used?

This test is used to see how well your lungs are working compared to the average or compared to your last test to see how well you are doing. This can show if there are substances in your home or work that are causing changes in your lungs.

How To Prepare for the Body Box Plethysmograph Test

To prepare for this test you should not smoke an hour before your test, drink alcohol four hours before the test, eat a large meal within 2 hours of the test, or exercise within 30 minutes of the test. You should wear clothing that allows you to breathe easy. During the test, you will wear a nose clip and be told to breathe through the mouthpiece.

Asthma Peak Flow

What is Peak Flow Measurement?

During a peak flow test, the physician is measuring the amount of air coming out of the lungs, also known as the peak expiratory flow rate. This can not only show the amount of air coming out of the lungs, but also the rate that air can be breathed out from the lungs.

Why Use a Peak Flow Meter?

A peak flow meter can help determine at which stage to get emergency help, or when to stop and add medicines. All of this information should be written down on your asthma action plan.
How Do I use the Peak Flow Meter?

During the test, your physician will give you a mouthpiece from the device. The device is small and can be used anywhere. You will insert the mouthpiece into your mouth and breathe out as instructed. This should be done after a full lung inhalation.

Asthma Spirometry

What is Spirometry?

Spirometry is a common test to see how well your lungs work. This is done by measuring the amount of air that you inhale, how much you can exhale, and how quickly this can be done. This is done after a diagnosis to see how well medications are working for you.

How to Prepare for a Spirometry Test

Your physician will give you detailed instructions on how to prepare for the test. You should also wear lose fitting clothes and avoid eating a large meal. These preparations will make it easier for you to breathe during your test.

What to Expect During a Spirometry Test

There are little to no risks from performing the test. You may feel dizzy or lightheaded from the heavy breathing. The test must be done correctly to ensure accurate results. If you do not understand, feel free to ask questions. You will be seated and a clip will be placed on your nose. You will breath in and out as hard as possible for three times. The test will take less than 15 minutes.
