Asthma medication is available in two different categories: rescue medications or long term control medications. These are helpful in treating symptoms. Coastal Allergy & Asthma, Mobile, AL
Long-term control medications are taken regularly to reduce the risk of an asthma attack and take control of symptoms. These types of medications are taken daily even when side effects are not present. There are a variety of medications that your allergist may prescribe. Your allergist will work closely with you to monitor symptoms and progress, and can adjust the dosages and medications accordingly.
Rescue medications are used for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or tightness in the chest. They do not relieve swilling in the breathing tubes. These medications are administered in metered dose inhalers and also are available in a solution for nebulizers. It is best to carry this medication with you wherever you go. These medications have some side effects such as a fast heartbeat or shakiness. These symptoms do not last long.
