Overview of Asthma Anti-Inflammatory Steroids

Asthma Medicine Anti-Inflammatory Steroid

The key treatment for asthma is an anti-inflammatory steroid, because they help to control asthma and prevent asthma attacks by reducing inflammation, swelling and mucus production. Since the airways are less inflamed, there is a smaller risk for an asthma attack. Inhaled steroids must be taken daily for best results, as the steroids can take several hours to take effect. Symptoms should see improvement within 1-3 weeks.

Types of Asthma Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Anti-inflammatory drugs come in two different types. They are available as steroids and corticosteroids. These anti-inflammatory drugs are helpful in controlling asthma. Inhaled corticosteroids are the most common medication for asthma. For this treatment, you may have to be on the medication for months before you see the benefits. The benefits include less asthma attacks, improved lung function, less hospitalization, and decreased use of rescue inhalers.

Side Effects of Asthma Anti-Inflammatory Steroids

Side effects from anti-inflammatory steroids are rare. Some of the minor side effects are thrush or hoarseness. Thrush is a fungal infection that appears in the mouth and is white. Thrush is easily treated with a prescription lozenge. Rinsing your mouth and/or gargling after the use of the inhaler can help to prevent these symptoms. Some people are also concerned about using a steroid on children; however, these steroids are just anti-inflammatory drugs that manage asthma.
